Einanderzuhören – Stadt-(Ge)Schichten
Einander zuhören – Stadt-(Ge)Schichten is an open source project than involves researchers, sound artists, art students and collectives of the city into the exploration of the residents’ relation to their sonic environment, through the creation of a series of soundwalks. The result is a sonic cartography about places, people and their mutual connections.
The project is based on the locative media platform noTours that uses geo-localisation technologies (GPS), and accommodates the composition of interactive and site-specific sound narratives. It was developed with the collaboration of Goethe-Institut of Athens, Escoitar.org (Spain), Fonés (Athens), artists Sofia Grigoriadou and Dana Papachristou, and with contributions of young artists living in Athens and students of the University of Thessaly (School of Architecture, Volos, Sound Design, Nicolas Remy).
noTours wishes to reverse the format of touristic sound guides, and to question the official discourses they incorporate. The aim is to challenge these dominant discourses, and to design a new narrative medium, that would be inclusive for residents’ memories and at the same time synchronous to the space and time of the city.
Inspired by the situationist drift (dérive) we create itineraries that evade from the eminently visual, and geometrically delineated, univocal urban space. Between fiction and factual reality, we intervene aurally to extended areas, and we proceed to their acoustic “mutation” by composing extra acoustic layers. Augmented aurality leads to the transformation of the perception of space, while wandering in an aurally augmented city reveals hidden stories and encounters.
